Appraisal and Synthesis

When my group first came upon the topic of animal assisted therapy and the use among oncology patients, my initial thought was that it must be a positive intervention. After reviewing the research that was found, animal assisted therapy was a positive intervention with oncology patients. This intervention had a great impact on physiological and psychological factors and increased the patient’s quality of life. The use of animal assisted therapy does not focus on curing the disease, but focuses more on caring for the patient. This idea of caring for the patient will be very important not only in my practice, but the practice of any other nurse. I know that as a nurse I want my patient to experience a better quality of life while in the hospital, and this is an intervention that has that magnitude. While my team and I wrote the rough draft of the paper we came to the conclusion that this intervention is positive and that it improves the overall mood of oncology patients. We also came to the conclusion that while this is a great intervention the research for this is very limited. It was stated that there needs to be more research done to eliminate the limitations and more research to prove the effectiveness. Overall, my team worked very well together when it came to writing the rough draft. We each included our own studies and we worked together on the other sections of the paper to make sure that there was enough evidence to support our PICOT question.
