Post- Interview

The leader that I interviewed had a lot of experience and advice to give me moving forward into my nursing career. One thing that I learned from this interview is that being a leader doesn’t mean that you must have the formal title. She emphasized this in her interview and spoke that she was seen as a leader on her floor before receiving a formal title. When she received a formal leadership title, she talked about how she had to set boundaries with co-workers. She rose into this position and now leads people who she used to work very closely with, so she said it was important for her to set boundaries and only discuss certain things with co-workers. Another, thing that I learned from her is to join the oncology nursing society in the local chapter in Maine. This is now something I will be doing and obtaining a copy of the cancer basic book that she recommended. I would rate the quality of her self- awareness as 10 and social management as a 10. She talked about an experience that she had with a patient, and how she had to take a step back and re-evaluate her emotions. The story that she told was very powerful and I think she understood that she needed to care for herself after this experience. Her social management I think is also rate very high because she is aware of how she can speak with co-workers and what topics can be addressed. We had talked about ethical issues, and she brought in real world experiences that she has faced on the oncology floor. She said that she faces these types of issues often because of the floor she is on, and she continued to explain that sometimes the healthcare team is not always on the same page. She explained how the team needs to sit down and discuss the course of action, and what treatment plan will benefit the patient the most. When we talked about the ethical issues it reinforced everything that I already knew but help to solidify the ethical issues. I knew that she was a leader but after this interview I can say that she is probably a very influential and powerful leader. She gave me some great advice on some courses to take that are oncology basic courses that would look good on a resume. She did provide a lot of great information on steps that I should take that would prepare me for an oncology job. After this interview I would say that I learned a great amount on how to be a better leader and how to prepare for my first job.
