Clinical Experience

Clinical Experience

During this semester of clinical I feel that I learned and was exposed to many different things that only benefitted my learning. This semester I got to see many different patients that each had a different diagnosis. One patient that I really interacted with and made a difference in their day was a patient that I had the third week of clinical. When I went in with this patient, I introduced myself and the patient stated that many nursing students had come in to see them. One ADL that I performed with the patient was assisting them in washing themself, which the patient was so grateful for. The patient stated that they had not washed themself a few days and was thankful that I came in and offered to wash them. Also, with this patient I sat and talked to them for a little while about their life and their family and the patient really seemed to enjoy talking to me. I think that what I learned from this patient is that it’s the little things that matter the most. I know I don’t think much of it when I take a shower, but for a patient who can’t do much it’s probably one of the best things in the world because they get a sense of normalcy back in their life. I think what I will take most from this is experience that it is so important is to make sure that the patient feels the best and provide them with support when they need. I think that when a patient is disabled in some way, they feel like part of them has been lost, but as a nurse we need to support them and remind them that they are still capable of doing so much. Overall, I think that this semester of clinical taught me a lot of different things and as a person I should appreciate the little things in my life.
