Art in Nursing

I found this picture in a textbook that I was looking at and I thought it was very interesting because of the description that it gave. This picture features the Greek God, Aesculapius, who was the God of healing. It said that he was represented by a snake because in folk medicine snakes were used to treat many ailments. Looking at this picture and reading the description immediately made me think of The Caduceus symbol. The Caduceus contains two snakes intertwined which symbolizes rebirth and regeneration. I thought this picture was very interesting because it represents folk medicine, but then the snakes are used in modern medicine in nursing. To me this picture represent what nursing is because it is all about healing and regenerating. As a nurse we are here to help our patients get better and make sure that they continue to be better. We are here to heal them when they can’t heal themselves and we will always be here no matter the circumstances. I think the traditions of nursing have carried on for so many years and will continue to carry on for many more to come. Nursing may develop new techniques and skills, but the goal or tradition that will remain that same it that we are here to care and heal our patients.

  1. Our two pieces are similar in the sense that they were both demonstrating pieces of nursing knowledge, as well as the representation of healing. Our pieces are different because mine focuses more on the knowledge behind nursing, as opposed to the overall healing aspect. I agree with your understanding that nurses will always be there no matter what. Nursing is definitely a profession with many traditions but also a profession with a lot of room for growth, as well as demonstration of new, evidence based practices.
