I chose to read chapter 9 because it talked about having your own voice when it comes to writing. I think that this was something that I was lacking in my essay. The chapter talked about including your simple phrases with more complex phrases. It said that not everything has to be complex and have big words to have a good essay. The chapter said that using phrases from everyday life can bring an essay to life and make it more interesting to read. I thought that this was very interesting because I know that I try to use big words to sound professional, but sometimes I even get tired of reading my own essay. I think that an essay should keep the attention of the reader even if it is a boring subject and that’s when a writer has to use simpler terms. I think that this is something that I need to change in my essay. I will go back and change the more complex ideas into simpler terms so that my reader may be more interested as they read my essay. It’s almost like creating metaphors. The second part of the chapter talked about considering the audience. Obviously, the writer needs to know who they are talking to in order to write a great essay. If the essay is for little kids, then yeah it can be fun, but if it is for your boss then you may need to be a little more serious. I think this is important when it comes to writing an essay because this way you know your limits and how far you can take it. Overall, I think that this chapter showed me that I need to add my own voice to my essay in order to make it interesting and keep the attention of the reader.
